What is Optometry and who is an Optometrist?

OPTOMETRY
According to the World Council of Optometry, “Optometry is a healthcare profession that is autonomous, educated, and regulated (licensed/registered).

OPTOMETRIST
Optometrists are the primary healthcare practitioners of the eye and visual system who provide comprehensive eye and vision care, which includes refraction and dispensing, detection/diagnosis and management of disease in the eye, and the rehabilitation of conditions of the visual system.”

OPTOMETRY IN THE PHILIPPINES
In the Philippines, Optometry, under Republic Act 8050, is defined as:
The science and art of examining the human eye, analyzing the ocular function, prescribing and dispensing ophthalmic lenses, prisms, contact lenses and their accessories and solutions, low vision aids, and similar appliances and devices, conducting ocular exercises, vision training, orthoptics, installing prosthetics, using authorized diagnostic pharmaceutical agents (DPA), and other preventive or corrective measures or procedures for the aid, correction, rehabilitation or relief of the human eye, or to attain maximum vision and comfort.

We partner with other health care professionals (e.g. ophthalmologists, internists, physical therapists, etc) in a co-management and multi-disciplinary approach to eye care. This enables us to provide the best vision care experience to our patients.
